Colouring Psychology: The Superhero Genre and The Shadow Theory

Exhibition

venom .jpeg

I think this was the most abstract piece I did for this project. Representing Venom was a bit of a struggle, I was not sure what to draw without giving too much away.

One of the biggest inspirations for this painting was Alfonso Ossorio's work. He is well known for his abstract expressionist paintings. His paintings are mainly created out of lines and shapes, rarely representing something recognisable.  Ossorio believed that art is a vessel for the soul, for the spirit - therefore he created pieces that showcased emotions rather than objects. As such, I decided that rather than portraying either Eddie or Venom, I should try to emulate the strain and the connection between the two. The main colour is black because of Venom's tendency to take over Eddie's body, clog his instincts and emotions. Eddie's inability to stop him for most of the film generates the imbalance we showcased in the painting.

The Eddie Brock - Venom pairing is a clear example of Self and Shadow. The film explores the integration of the Shadow and the end showcases the success. Once Eddie accepts Venom, they become balanced - not a villain story anymore, but the rise of a new type of hero.

baby groot.jpeg

Baby Groot - Marvel's most innocent and pure character. I tried the abstract route for this painting as well. I knew I wanted to go with something nature-related and I used soft pastels to signify the childlike aspect of Groot's personality. I added the flower petals later, to stretch the natural concept even further. I also wanted to highlight both the fragility of Groot's existence and his incredible power of rebirth. For this, I left half the painting intact, while on the other side I crushed the flower petals and the leaves.

doctor strange final.jpeg

The painting depicts Doctor Strange's character during his standalone film. Doctor Strange controls all his power using his hands, therefore I made them the main element of this painting. The yellow was supposed to signify caution. The blue faces show the struggle he goes through throughout the film, as he deals with different timelines and events. I used blue to showcase his tendency to think before he acts, the most important challenges he faces happen inside his mind.  The red signifies his incredible power, mostly undiscovered in the first film. The green shows that Strange's personality is being split into millions of directions as he experiences timeline after timeline. The soft purple suggests the connection to the mystical and the fact that the character is being transformed.

hulk done.jpeg

The explanation for this painting is easy. Bruce Banner is a cerebral character, the blue signifies his tendency to think before he acts and highlights the fact that the struggle mostly happens inside his head. I used steel blue as it is often associated with intellect. At the same time, the green taking over the painting signifies Hulk's stronger Persona. He is the one who has most of the power in this relationship. I used the purple keeping in mind what I learned in my research. Purple signifies that something is going to die or that something is going to change drastically. Outlining the drawing with a soft purple wants to suggest the extreme difference between Bruce's personality and Hulk's. However, the different shades of green are there to suggest the idea that Hulk is both a dangerous being and what keeps Bruce safe whenever danger appears.

spiderman mysterio done.jpeg

Not abstract drawings for this one, here we can see clear characters. The relationship between Spider-Man and Mysterio is clearly depicted and highlighted through the chosen colours. Purple here suggests delusion, the presence of strong magic. Mysterio has the power to reshape how we see reality so I used purple as an omen - to suggest that what we see is not what it appears to be. The green hands covering most of the painting convey the danger, the existence of a poisoned character.

black widow done.jpeg

Red and black - Black Widow's theme colours. I thought the best way to showcase her was through her own colours as they already highlight her personality and her hidden emotions. Different shades of red signify her power, her rebellious personality. Warm reds, almost close to orange, to suggest her more sensual side. The black mixing with darker reds to convey the torment she is going through, the rage she hides. If we consider the idea that you can tell a lot about a person by their eyes, the choice to hide them conveys Natasha's tendency to keep secrets, her life before she became Black Widow still being a mystery. We know her Persona, but we have yet to understand her true Self.

wanda done.jpeg

Wanda's powers are showcased through different shades of red throughout the films to signify the emotion behind them - is she using them out of anger or out of playfulness? I used red in the same way through the painting - visually loud, to suggest that she can be aggressive, powerful, even dangerous. At the same time, red covers her face, tries to take over the painting, conveying that sometimes her powers are too much even for her. This colour tends to make the viewer anxious.

I used orange to showcase her nicer side. When she is not the Scarlet Witch, Wanda appears as a more upbeat person - she is nice and welcoming with everyone around her.

The green suggests the wide difference between her as Wanda Maximoff and her as the Scarlet Witch. Both her exuberance and her danger.

spiderman done.jpeg

This was more of a trial painting. I wanted to see if what happened when I interviewed people about the videos would repeat if I stick to clear representations.

I only used Spider-Man's theme colours for this piece. Since it was the second painting with the same character, I wanted to see if, since people are used to seeing this character portrayed like this, just the way the drawing was made would influence them rather than the colours. For this painting, people reacted more to the way the drawing was made, rather than the colours themselves. The same as with the videos, once people recognise the character, they focus more on them rather than on the colours themselves - the colour becomes a second character, as it is already engraved into people's subconscious.

captain marvel done.jpeg

I decided to go back to a more abstract style for Captain Marvel.  The red that shows even through the clouds signifies her incredible power, her passion and her courage. I used two shades of blue. True blue (the lighter shade) to show that she is loyal and dependable. Royal blue (the darker shade) to emphasize her power. The white to suggest her purity and her goodness. Captain Marvel is said to be the most powerful out of all the Marvel superheroes, therefore I tried to strongly emphasize that throughout the drawing. The white that covers most of the painting also suggests how close she is to perfection, to absolutism.
