VENOM / EDDIE BROCK

   ANSWERS:

 1. Aneta: A multitude of feelings mixed together, both good and bad. A deconstructed rainbow. The longer you look at it, the more some colours start to jump in your face as if they want to take over the painting.

    2. Mihai: Seen for the first time, it can appear dark and depressing. I think I can see a face behind the black colour, and the person I see seems content

    3. Mihaela: Emotions it inspires: chaos, instability, uncertainty, falling. description: when a tornado/storm approaches the place you live in, my mind during physics/chemistry/maths when I have mixed feelings about something. Yes, I believe the colours make it feel a little bit negative. If the same picture would have been painted with light colours like pink, yellow, light blue, I would have perceived it as when you fall in love and all of your thoughts are mixed up for that one person.

    4.  Miruna: Not caring about anything. A multitude of mixed feelings happening at the same time. Reacting to all the feelings at the same time.

    5. Madeleine: The greatest emotion that comes through here is chaos. It’s provoked by the technique but also the greater combination of colours; ranging from highly saturated to black. The variety and breadth make me feel claustrophobic and anxious.

    6. Andrada: Restlessness, uncertainty. A lot of emotions are being transmitted, but these are the main ones. I think all the colours are important in suggesting uncertainty.

BEHIND THE PAINTING

I think this was the most abstract piece I did for this project. Representing Venom was a bit of a struggle, I was not sure what to draw without giving too much away.

One of the biggest inspirations for this painting was Alfonso Ossorio's work. He is well known for his abstract expressionist paintings. His paintings are mainly created out of lines and shapes, rarely representing something recognisable.  Ossorio believed that art is a vessel for the soul, for the spirit - therefore he created pieces that showcased emotions rather than objects. As such, I decided that rather than portraying either Eddie or Venom, I should try to emulate the strain and the connection between the two. The main colour is black because of Venom's tendency to take over Eddie's body, clog his instincts and emotions. Eddie's inability to stop him for most of the film generates the imbalance we showcased in the painting.

The Eddie Brock - Venom pairing is a clear example of Self and Shadow. The film explores the integration of the Shadow and the end showcases the success. Once Eddie accepts Venom, they become balances - not a villain story anymore, but the rise of a new type of hero.
